AAOS Board of Directors Approves Updates to CPG for Knee Osteoarthritis

On Monday, the AAOS Board of Directors approved the full update to the 2013 Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) for Treatment of Osteoarthritis of the Knee. The 2021 Clinical Practice Guideline on Treatment of Osteoarthritis of the Knee (Non-arthroplasty) Third Edition includes updates to all 19 evidence-based recommendations included in the second edition of the guideline, with a total of 29 non-surgical treatment recommendations. In addition, seven of the recommendations deemed inconclusive due to lack of available evidence from the 2013 CPG were upgraded.

AAOS Welcomes New Members at Special Luncheon Event

New AAOS members who joined in 2020 and 2021 were invited to attend the New Member Luncheon yesterday during the Annual Meeting. This special event featured a complimentary buffet reception with welcome addresses by AAOS Past President Joseph A. Bosco III, MD, FAAOS; AAOS Membership Council Chair Elizabeth Matzkin, MD, FAAOS; and guest speaker Brian McCardel, MD, FAAOS. Over the course of his career, Dr. McCardel has been involved in numerous community service and leadership activities, including serving as a member of the AAOS Health Care Systems Committee and the AAOS Research and Quality Council.

Study Indicates AJRR Data Are Generalizable to the Larger U.S. Population

Data from the American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR) are representative of national trends and may be generalizable to the population at large, according to a study currently on display as a poster at the Annual Meeting. The study, which covers primary total knee and total hip arthroplasty, found that the AJRR reasonably represents the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) estimates for hospital size and patient age, sex, and race. Both NIS and AJRR followed a similar overall trend of most procedures being performed at hospitals with <50 cases annually.

Study: Shorter Intervals between Knee Arthroscopy and TKA May Increase Complications Risk

A study that was presented yesterday at the Annual Meeting found a relationship between surgery timing and risk of postoperative complications in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) after previous knee arthroscopy. The researchers evaluated insurance claims data between 2006 and 2017. Five percent of patients (n = 8,863) underwent arthroscopy within two years prior to TKA. An interval of less than nine months between arthroscopy and TKA was associated with increased risk of revision, complications, and periprosthetic joint infection.

Study Investigates Factors Associated with Poor versus Excellent RTSA Outcomes

Allergies, depression, preoperative opioid use, and prior ipsilateral shoulder surgery predict poor outcomes in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA), according to a study published online in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. A total of 338 patients were followed for two years. Outcomes were assessed via American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons scores. Worker’s compensation status and preoperative rotator cuff tear arthropathy were also associated with poor outcomes. On the other hand, a primary osteoarthritis diagnosis and private insurance were predictive of excellent outcomes.
