Study: Up to One-third of ‘Nightstick Fractures’ Are Linked to Intimate Partner Violence

A study, which will be displayed as a poster tomorrow and Wednesday at the AAOS 2021 Annual Meeting, found that up to one-third of women who sustain a fracture to the ulna bone of the forearm—otherwise referred to as “nightstick fractures”—may be victims of intimate partner violence (IPV). Sixty-two patients were assessed, and 11 fractures were confirmed to be related to IPV while 9 were suspected to be related. IPV was significantly associated with minimally displaced fractures, homelessness, and number of previous ED visits due to musculoskeletal injury. Only 40 percent of suspected/confirmed cases were formally evaluated or screened for IPV.

Randomized Study Evaluates Digital Media–based Therapy after DRF

A randomized, controlled study published online in the Journal of Hand Surgery found favorable outcomes of a digital media–based hand therapy program after distal radius fracture (DRF) management with volar plating. Twenty-one patients received an at-home version of traditional therapy with digital videos. Twenty-eight controls underwent a standard 12-week protocol. In both groups, QuickDASH (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand), visual analog scale pain, and Veterans RAND 12-Item Health Survey scores all showed significant improvements at six and 12 weeks postoperatively. Between-group differences were not statistically significant.

Study: Radiographic Improvement after Lumbar Interbody Fusion for RA

A study published online in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders found favorable outcomes of lumbar interbody fusion for patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Sixty-four patients were enrolled and followed for two years. Anterior and posterior disk height were substantially reduced at follow-up, and there were significant radiographic improvements overall. The fusion and subsidence rates were 90.4 percent and 28.8 percent, respectively. Patients who underwent oblique lateral interbody fusion had comparable fusion, but higher subsidence rates compared to those who underwent anterior or transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion.
