Study Finds Increased Risk of THA in Elite Sport Athletes

According to a cohort study published online in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, having been an elite athlete was associated with an increased risk of total hip arthroplasty (THA) in both sexes. A total of 1,402 female athletes and 1,902 male athletes were included in the analysis. Relative Cox regression was used to assess THA risk for different sport disciplines and sex. Compared with the general population, there was an overall increased risk for THA in former athletes at age 75 years. At 75 years, THA risk was 11.6 percent for female athletes and 8.3 percent for male athletes.

Study Compares Rates of Recurrent Dislocation after Arthroscopic Bankart Repair for Second versus Primary Dislocation

Arthroscopy published a retrospective study comparing the rates of recurrent dislocation and outcomes in patients undergoing arthroscopic Bankart repair immediately after a first-time dislocation versus those who sustained a second dislocation after nonoperative management. Outcome measurements included range of motion (ROM) and visual analog scale (VAS) scores. The study population comprised 14 patients undergoing surgery after two dislocations and 63 undergoing surgical stabilization after a single shoulder dislocation. The rate of recurrent dislocation was significantly lower in those who sustained single dislocations compared with secondary dislocation. There were no significant differences noted between groups regarding VAS scores and ROM.

Study Analyzes Modifiable Drivers of Total Healthcare Utilization for Patients Undergoing ACLR

A study analyzed the modifiable drivers of total healthcare utilization (THU), immediate procedure reimbursement, and surgeon reimbursement for patients undergoing ACL reconstruction (ACLR). The study, which was published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine, utilized a national commercial insurance database to identify 34,862 ACLR patients. The primary indicator of THU and immediate procedure reimbursement was an outpatient surgical setting. For surgeon reimbursement, the primary driver was an out-of-network surgeon. While there was only a minor effect on surgeon reimbursement, health maintenance organizations assisted in cost-optimization efforts.

Scoping Review Assesses Bone Mineral Density in Long-term Osteosarcoma and Ewing Sarcoma Survivors

The Journal of Bone Oncology published a scoping review examining the prevalence of low bone mineral density and risk of fractures in survivors of osteosarcoma (OS) and Ewing sarcoma (ES). Patient demographic, diagnosis, bone mineral density, laboratory examinations, and incidence of fractures were extracted from studies that describe bone mineral density in association with bone health in OS and ES survivors. Nearly 50 percent of OS and ES patients had bone mass deficit. Additionally, frailer physique and younger age at diagnosis were associated with lower bone mass.
