Study Investigates Knee Pain Symptom Resolution after Knee Arthroscopy
A study published online in Arthroscopy found that two-thirds of patients with grinding/clicking or pivot pain reported symptom resolution after knee arthroscopy. The researchers collected one-year follow-up data from 584 patients. Forty-four percent of patients reported symptom resolution for catching/locking. Symptom resolution was associated with greater improvements in Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score subscales for pain, activities of daily living, and quality of life. Smoking status, overweight/obesity, meniscal tear, and number of compartments with focal cartilage lesions were predictive of symptom persistence.
Study: Recovery and Duration of Physical Therapy after Total Joint Replacement
An observational study published online in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders found that the impact of recovery with physical therapy (PT) after total hip arthroplasty (THA) was smaller in patients with more comorbidities. The researchers assessed 1,289 THA patients and 1,333 total knee arthroplasty patients, of which 95 percent underwent postoperative PT. Patients with PT duration of ≥12 weeks demonstrated less improvement on patient-reported measures than those with shorter durations.
Study Identifies Lateral Femoral Wall Thickness Cutoff for Predicting Trochanteric Fracture Surgery Failure
A study published in the July/August issue of Current Orthopaedic Practice identified a lateral femoral wall thickness (LWT) cutoff of ≤19.6 mm for predicting lateral wall fracture after surgery for trochanteric hip fracture. Forty-two patients underwent surgery with dynamic hip screws. At one year postoperatively, 12 percent of patients had a postoperative lateral wall fracture. Mean LWT was 18.04 mm in the postoperative fracture group and 26.22 mm in the intact group. Revision occurred in 40 percent and 5 percent, respectively.
Study Estimates Annual Occupational Radiation Exposure among Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeons
A retrospective study published in the August issue of the Journal of OrthopaedicTrauma reported that common misperceptions regarding radiation exposure in orthopaedic trauma surgery are “unfounded,” and surgeons specializing in pelvis and acetabular fractures are at increased risk of dangerous levels of radiation exposure. The researchers estimated surgeon radiation exposure at the thyroid, chest, and pelvis in surgeons at a level 1 trauma center. Total annual exposures were estimated at 521 mR (thyroid), 2,452 mR (chest), and 1,129 mR (pelvis). Lead-based personal protective equipment mitigated ≥90 percent of exposure.
AAOS Advocacy Efforts Focus on Physician Burden Relief

Lundy, MD, MBA, FAAOS, discusses AAOS efforts to reduce the administrative burden on orthopaedic surgeons. “Currently, the AAOS Office of Government Relations is focusing on two hot topics regarding reducing the administrative burden on physicians: prior authorization and independent dispute resolution processes, as implemented through bills and laws addressing surprise medical bills”
