Study Finds Volume of Knee Surgeries Has Rebounded since the Start of the COVID-19 Pandemic

The rates of orthopaedic knee procedures have rebounded since the early days of the pandemic, with the rates of primary and one-component revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) exceeding pre-pandemic levels, according to a retrospective database study published in Cureus. The study included a review of 51 healthcare organizations and more than 68 million patient records. In spring 2020, rates of primary TKA, femoral or entire tibial-component revision TKA, and open treatment of femoral shaft fractures were significantly less compared with pre-pandemic records. Orthopaedic knee procedural volume returned to baseline in summer 2020.

Study: Higher Rates of Time to Surgery and Mortality in Older Hip Fracture Patients

The Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma published a retrospective study online examining the association of elevated troponin levels with time to surgery and the risk of mortality in hip fracture patients aged >60 years. The time to surgery, 90-day mortality, and major complications were compared between 43 patients with elevated cardiac troponin levels and 256 patients with normal troponin levels at the time of hospital admission. Patients with elevated troponin levels had a 21-hour increase in the time from hospital admission to surgery. In addition, there was a 14 percent increase in 90-day mortality in patients with elevated troponin levels.

Study Compares the Quality of Recovery after RCR with Interscalene Liposomal Bupivacaine versus Interscalene Nerve Catheter

A retrospective cohort study published in the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine compared the quality of recovery after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (RCR) in 48 patients who received interscalene liposomal bupivacaine and 32 patients who received interscalene peripheral nerve catheter. The main outcome measurements included quality of recovery (QoR-15) scores pre- and 48 hours postsurgery. Compared to preoperative QoR-15 scores, the liposomal bupivacaine group had a mean score reduction of 3.9 after 48 hours compared with a reduction of 25.1 in the catheter group. The liposomal bupivacaine group had significantly lower pain scores and improved quality of sleep.

Study: Double Vision and Light Sensitivity Are Associated with Academic Time Loss after Concussion in Pediatric Patients

The Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine published a cross-sectional study investigating the association between academic time loss after concussion and vision symptoms and impairments among pediatric patients. Near point of convergence (NPC) testing and symptom ratings of dizziness, blurry vision, seeing double, and light sensitivity were compared between 36 patients who missed >5 days of school and 176 patients who missed <5 days. Patients who missed >5 days of school had higher rates of double vision and light sensitivity. However, there were no significant differences regarding dizziness or blurry vision.
