Study Investigates Incidence of ED Visits for DVT after TJA

At a single center, 1 percent of patients who underwent primary total joint arthroplasty (TJA) visited the ED due to concerns of postoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT), according to a study published in the Dec. 1 issue of the Journal of the AAOS ®. In total, 10,445 TJA patients were compared with 252 propensity-matched controls. The most common reason for accessing the ED was self-referral (64 percent). Fifteen of the 108 patients with suspected DVT (14 percent) had confirmed DVT. Mean costs for ED visits for DVT was $834 for patients with public insurance (range, $394–$2,877).

Meta-analysis Compares Joint-preserving Therapies for Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head

A meta-analysis of 17 randomized clinical trials, published online in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, reported no statistical difference between various joint-preserving therapy methods and nonoperative treatment for osteonecrosis of the femoral head. Analyzed interventions included core decompression with or without bone graft, tantalum rod implantation, and/or cell therapy, and vascularized bone graft. No procedures demonstrated significant differences in rates of conversion to total hip arthroplasty or Harris Hip Scores versus conservative management.

Study: Preoperative Ulnar Neuritis May Impact Return to Sport after UCL Reconstruction in Baseball Pitchers

A retrospective study of 500 ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstruction cases in baseball pitchers, published online in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, found that preoperative ulnar neuritis may adversely impact odds of returning to sport. Ulnar neuritis was present in 19.4 percent of patients and was more common in patients with acute-onset UCL injury. Ulnar nerve transposition at the time of UCL reconstruction was not found to impact return to sport.
