Study Investigates Association of Preoperative Pain, Grade of Arthritis, and Pain 12 Months after TKA
Persistent knee pain 12 months after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) was not associated with a low radiological grade of osteoarthritis (OA) alone, according to a study published in The Bone & Joint Journal. Preoperative clinical, psychological, and radiological data were recorded in 300 TKA patients. Persistent knee pain was recorded 12 months after surgery. After 12 months, TKA patients with a combination of high preoperative pain and a low OA grade had significantly increased knee pain. These patients significantly more likely to be male or younger and have higher pain catastrophizing and depression.

Study: Incomplete IV Vancomycin Prophylaxis Resulted in Increased Rate of Infectious Shoulder Arthroplasty Complications
The Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery published a retrospective cohort study assessing whether incomplete administration of IV vancomycin prophylaxis before shoulder arthroplasty (SA) affected the rate of prosthetic joint infection (PJI). In total, 461 primary SA patients were included. IV administration was defined as >30 minutes of infusion prior to incision and was completed in 163 patients. Incomplete IV administration resulted in higher rates of any infectious complication (8 percent versus 2.3 percent), PJI (5.5 percent versus 1.0 percent), and reoperation due to infectious complications (4.9 percent versus 1.0 percent).

Study: Risk Factors Associated with Conversion THA following Pipkin IV Femoral Head Fractures
The Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma published a retrospective cohort study investigating the risk factors for early conversion total hip arthroplasty (THA) in Pipkin IV femoral head fractures. Patients were divided into groups based on classification of femoral head fracture (split-type, n = 65; depression-type, n = 77). Twenty-nine percent of split-type fracture patients and 27.8 percent of depression-type fracture patients underwent conversion THA within one year. Risk factors of conversion THA after depression-type fracture were increased age and posterior femoral head fracture location.

Study Examines Prognostic Factors for Survival in Patients with High-grade Chondrosarcoma
According to a retrospective study published online in Cancer Diagnosis & Prognosis, the five-year overall survival (OS) rate in patients with high-grade chondrosarcoma (CS) was 75.9 percent. OS, distant failure-free survival (DFFS), and local failure-free survival (LFFS) were evaluated in 44 patients. LFFS and DFFS rates were 90.8 percent and 66.5 percent, respectively. Tumor size, tumor grade, and surgical margin were found to be significant prognostic factors for OS and DFFS. In addition, distant metastasis was significantly associated with OS.
