CMS Issues Fact Sheet on Care in Hospital Alternate Care Sites
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published a fact sheet for local and state governments regarding CMS programs and payments related to care in hospital alternate care sites. The document explains how to seek payments through programs including Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program for acute inpatient and outpatient care furnished at the site.

House Approves Changes to Paycheck Protection Program
The House of Representatives voted today to pass changes to the Paycheck Protection Program. The bipartisan legislation seeks to add flexibility to the terms of use for the program’s loans, extending the eight-week period during which small businesses must use the emergency loans in order to be eligible for loan forgiveness to 24 weeks. The “75/20” ratio requiring businesses to use 75 percent of the money for payroll costs and no more than 25 percent for other costs would change to 60/40. Similar legislation failed a key procedural vote in the Senate last week, making a path forward for this bill unclear. The AAOS Office of Government Relations is continuing to monitor it.

Looking to Healthcare Workers to Safely Reopen
An article published in The New Yorker discussed tips for businesses to safely reopen amid the COVID-19 pandemic, acknowledging one sector that has successfully remained open during this time: health care. According to the report, few COVID-19 transmissions have been reported among healthcare workers, largely due to a combination of hygiene measures, screening, distancing, and masks.

U.S. COVID-19 Death Toll Exceeds 100,000
COVID-19 deaths in the United States surpassed 100,000 on Wednesday. With more than 1.6 million cases since January, America remains the world’s leading nation on COVID-19 cases. A predictive model supported by White House officials forecasts that about 32,000 more deaths nationwide will occur by Aug. 4.

AAOS, AAOS Now Deliver COVID-19 Resources and News
In her first deputy editor’s message, Julie Balch Samora, MD, PhD, MPH, FAAOS, discussed the various ways AAOS has committed to providing the most up-to-date COVID-19 news. AAOS Now is working to publish articles related to COVID-19, some of which will be published online ahead of print or solely online. AAOS has created webinars to help with orthopaedic resident training challenges and opportunities.
