Senate Confirms Xavier Becerra as Secretary of HHS

Yesterday, the Senate confirmed Xavier Becerra as the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under President Joe Biden. He was confirmed by a narrow vote of 50–49. Mr. Becerra previously served as California Attorney General, where he defended both the Affordable Care Act and Governor Gavin Newsom’s stay-at-home orders during COVID-19. He was also previously a member of the House of Representatives and is the first Latino to lead HHS. His immediate focus is expected to be selecting HHS’ political appointees. Study Measures Rates and Risk Factors of Infection after Distal Tibial Fracture Fixation

A study published online in Injury determined rates and risk factors of infection after ORIF of distal tibia fractures with a distal tibia locking plate and/or isolated screws. Fifty-five patients treated between 2009 and 2016 were included. The overall rate of infection was 31.5 percent, mainly caused by Staphylococcus aureus. There was a statistically significant association between older age and infection rate. Anterolateral plating was also associated with infection. In patients who received a splint, a positive relationship was found between infection rate and shorter time to definitive fixation.
