Study: Comparison of Costs and Outcomes of Subsequent TJA Procedures

A study of 774 patients with multiple total joint arthroplasty (TJA) procedures published online in The Journal of Arthroplasty found comparable readmissions (four percent versus five percent), discharge to skilled nursing facilities (SNF; 15 percent versus 15 percent), and episode-of-care costs ($18,534 versus $18,532) between subsequent procedures. The authors noted that patients with high episode-of-care costs were likely to have high costs for subsequent procedures. Patients with repeat high-cost procedures had increased odds of discharge to SNF compared to normative-cost patients.

Study: AR-assisted Elbow Arthroplasty Shows Improved Accuracy of Implant Placement

Augmented reality (AR)–assisted placement of humeral and ulnar prosthesis during total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) showed increased accuracy compared to standard techniques, according to a study published online in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. Six elbows underwent TEA with or without AR assistance. Researchers compared rotational and translational accuracy between the two approaches. Compared with standard techniques, rotational accuracy improved for joint components placed using AR (mean position error; humeral, 1.4 degrees versus 4.4 degrees; ulnar, 5.5 degrees versus 19.5 degrees). Translational accuracy also was improved (humeral, 1.5 mm versus 1.3 mm; ulnar, 1.5 mm versus 6.9 mm).

Study: TDR in the Office versus the OR Leads to Reduced Complications

Trigger digit release (TDR) performed in an office-based procedure room (PR) using local-only anesthesia significantly reduced major medical complications compared to TDR in the OR (0.99 percent versus 1.47 percent), according to a study published online in the Journal of Hand Surgery. The researchers compared 7,640 PR and 29,96 OR cases. Surgical site complications were relatively lower in the PR versus OR, but the risk difference was not statistically significant. Iatrogenic complications were infrequent in both groups.

Upcoming Webinar: Prior Authorizations, Peer to Peer Review

Prior authorizations on procedures can be a cumbersome process. Each payer may have different policies and guidelines on which procedures require prior authorization, making it difficult for physicians and their staff to keep track of changing policies. On July 8 from 7:15 PM – 8:15 PM CT, Eric Stiefel, MD, FAAOS, and Christopher Kauffman, MD, FAAOS, will host a webinar examining in detail the burden prior authorizations and peer-to-peer review process takes on physicians, as well as strategies to work through these hurdles.
