Study Compares Survivorship and Positioning of Femur-first versus Tibial-first UKA Techniques

In a study in the Journal of Arthroplasty, compared to the traditional tibia-first (TF) technique, a femur-first (FF) technique resulted in improved radiographic positioning and bone preservation in patients undergoing unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA). The study included 141 FF UKAs and 147 TF UKAs. Postoperative radiographs were retrospectively reviewed to determine implant positioning. The FF technique resulted in significantly thinner polyethylene and <4 mm bearing thickness in 94 percent of cases. Additionally, higher Knee Society Functional scores were observed in the FF cohort at the final follow-up.

Study: Antidepressant Use Associated with Non-response to Osteoporosis Treatment in Elderly Patients

A retrospective study in Archives of Osteoporosis found that the presence of depression and/or serotonergic antidepressant use was associated with non-response to osteoporosis treatment in patients aged >65 years. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured via dual-energy MRI at baseline and after two years. There was a total of 198 patients with osteoporosis included in the analysis. Eighty-three patients had a diagnosis of depression, of which, all were on serotonergic antidepressants. Baseline BMD was comparable in depressed and non-depressed patients. Lumbar spine BMD change was significantly lower in depressed patients than non-depressed patients (2.89 percent versus 4.85 percent).

Study Reports Significant Deformity Correction following Fourth-generation Minimally Invasive Hallux Valgus Surgery

Foot & Ankle International published a study reporting on the clinical and radiologic outcomes of an evolved, fourth-generation, minimally invasive (MI) hallux valgus technique. The primary outcomes included the Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire (MOXFQ), and secondary outcomes were radiographic deformity correction and clinical assessment. Fifty patients undergoing MI hallux valgus surgery with a minimum follow-up of 12 months were included. MOXFQ scores improved from 13.1 to 53.4 after surgery. Additionally, significant improvements were seen in hallux valgus angle, intermetatarsal angle, and distal metatarsal articular angle postsurgery.

Retrospective Analysis Assesses Anomalies Associated with Operatively Treated Patients with Congenital Scoliosis

According to a retrospective study in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, congenital scoliosis was associated with a comorbidity rate of 55 percent in patients who underwent scoliosis correction surgery. Researchers assessed the prevalence and distribution of comorbidities in 636 operatively treated patients with scoliosis. Patients presented with scoliosis at a mean age of 6.4 years, and the mean Cobb angle of the major curve was 60.8 degrees. The most common comorbidity was diastematomyelia at a rate of 59.1 percent. Furthermore, patients with intraspinal abnormalities had more severe deformities and larger Cobb angles.
