Study Identifies Risk Factors of Hypokalemia following TJA

Orthopaedic Surgery published a study that examined the incidence and risk factors of hypokalemia following TJA. Serum potassium levels were retrospectively collected pre- and postsurgery, and various factors (e.g., age, health history, red blood cell count) were compared between patients with and without postsurgical hypokalemia. After TJA, hypokalemia risk was 53.1%, with rates on days 1, 3, and 5 postoperation at 12.5%, 40.7%, and 9.6%, respectively. Independent risk factors included preoperative serum potassium concentration, preoperative red blood cells count, and history of diabetes.

Study Compares Effect of Short versus Standard Stems on Proximal Bone Resorption after RTSA

A retrospective case-control study in Archives of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery explored whether stem length and width influenced proximal humeral bone resorption after reverse TSA (RTSA). The 2-year clinical and radiographic outcomes were compared between short (n = 19) and standard-length stems (n = 31). Relative Constant scores were 91.8% and 98.3% in the short and standard groups, respectively. Sixteen patients in the standard group exhibited stress shielding compared with four patients in the short group.

Does the Lateral Subvastus Lateralis Approach for TKA Result in Superior Outcomes and Kinematics?

According to a study in the Journal of Knee Surgery that evaluated the outcomes and kinematics of quadriceps-sparing lateral subvastus lateralis approach (SLA) for TKA, SLA resulted in increased medial femoral rollback early in flexion compared with a conventional medial parapatellar approach (MPA). Fourteen SLA patients were compared with 13 MPA patients. Both groups showed similar improvements in postoperative outcomes. The MPA group had significantly greater improvement in Knee Society Scores at 3 months, 1 year, and 2 years.

DNA/RNA-based Study Examines Characteristic Gene Alterations in Bone and Soft-tissue Sarcomas

Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research published a study that sought to identify potential therapeutic targets for tyrosine kinase fusions in bone and soft-tissue sarcomas. Eighty-two patients were included in the analysis. DNA/RNA analysis identified key alterations in bone and soft-tissue sarcomas, including TP53, MDM2, and CDK4. STRN3NTRK3 rearrangements in bone exhibited significant transforming ability in 3T3 cells, and cells positive for STRN3NTRK3 demonstrated sensitivity to larotrectinib in vitro.
