Retrospective Study Evaluates Aspirin in the Prevention of DVT after Meniscus Root Repair
A study published in Current Orthopaedic Practice found that aspirin was less effective in preventing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) than low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) or apixiban in patients undergoing meniscus root repair. The incidence of symptomatic DVT was compared between 16 patients who received aspirin prophylaxis and 42 patients who received LMWH or apixiban. There were no significant differences between groups regarding patient sex, BMI, laterality of repair, associated procedures, or smoking history. Of the patients who received LMWH or apixiban, no symptomatic DVTs occurred; however, three DVTs were identified in the aspirin cohort.
Study Investigates Inequalities in the Evaluation of Male and Female Athletes in Sports Medicine Research
The American Journal of Sports Medicine published a systematic review assessing the number of studies evaluating male versus female athletes and identifying in which coed sports female athletes are underrepresented. Of the 669 studies included, 70.7 percent focused on male athletes, 8.8 percent focused on female athletes, and 20.5 percent included male and female athletes. Females were more frequently isolated in softball and volleyball, while male athletes were more commonly researched in baseball, soccer, American football, basketball, rugby, hockey, and Australian football.
Study: Functional and Radiographic Outcomes of Cemented versus Uncemented RTSA in Elderly Patients
A retrospective case-control study published in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders investigated the differences in functional or radiographic outcomes between cemented versus uncemented reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) for proximal humerus fractures in elderly patients. In total, 17 patients undergoing uncemented RTSA were matched to 34 patients undergoing cemented RTSA. Clinical and radiographic outcomes were assessed two years postoperatively. Bone resorption at the proximal humerus was significantly more common in patients with uncemented RTSA. Both groups had low rates of revision and positive functional outcomes at the two-year follow-up.
Randomized Trial: Decompression with Fusion versus Decompression Alone for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
According to a randomized clinical trial of patients with lumbar spinal stenosis published in The Bone & Joint Journal, adding fusion to decompression of the lumbar spine increased the rate of new stenosis. Overall, 103 patients were treated by decompression with fusion and 108 by decompression alone. The main outcome was the presence of a new stenosis evaluated via MRI after two years. New stenosis was observed more frequently in patients who received decompression and fusion (47 percent versus 29 percent). The rate of proximal adjacent-level stenosis was 44 percent after fusion compared with 17 percent after decompression alone.
