Study: Direct Lateral and Direct Anterior THA Show Low Risk of Instability in Patients with Prior LSF

According to a retrospective study published in the April 1 issue of the Journal of AAOS ®, anterior supine-based approaches are associated with a low risk of dislocation in patients with simultaneous degenerative hip and lumbar spine pathology. A total of 582 patients aged ≥18 years who received lumbar spinal fusion (LSF) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) between 2000 and 2018 were evaluated. The direct anterior approach was used in 24.6 percent of patients and the direct lateral approach was used in 75.4 percent. Only five dislocations occurred in the entire cohort (0.9 percent).

Study Identifies Variable Functional Mobility within Levels of Gross Motor Function in Children with Cerebral Palsy

A retrospective study published in the April issue of the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics reported variability in mobility function within each level of the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) when administered to children with cerebral palsy (CP). In total, 788 patients (mean age, 11.2 years) underwent the GMFCS and the Functional Mobility Scale (FMS). There were significant differences in FMS ratings distribution among GMFCS levels for all distances measured (at home, at school, and around the community).

Randomized Study: Protein Supplementation Is Associated with Improved Recovery after PSF

A randomized study published online in Clinical Spine Surgery found increased protein intake was associated with improved healing after posterior spinal fusion (PSF) compared with a placebo-controlled group. From 48 hours preoperatively to one month postoperatively, participants received a diet with 1.2 g of protein. The intervention group received an additional 36 g whey protein supplement daily. The intervention group had significantly higher rates of vertebral fusion, lower rates of surgical site infection and pain, and improved wound healing compared with the control group.
