FDA Issues Warning of Risks Associated with Recalled Joint Replacement Devices

The FDA has warned patients and healthcare providers about Exactech’s joint replacement devices manufactured between 2004 and August 2021, which were recalled in 2021 and 2022. Study Assesses Potential of AI for Hip Fracture Detection and Outcome Prediction

A study in JAMA Network Open conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 39 studies to evaluate the performance of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms and machine learning (ML) designed to diagnose hip fractures on radiographs and predict postoperative clinical outcomes after hip fracture surgery. Eighteen and 21 studies used AI models to diagnose and predict outcomes after hip fracture surgery, respectively. Mortality and length of hospital stay were the most predicted outcomes. AI performance compared to clinicians was comparable; following pooled data analysis, the odds ratio for diagnostic error of ML models was 0.79.

Study: Does Hand Surgery Procedure Room Setting Affect Incidence of Surgical Site Infection?

The Journal of Hand Surgery published a prognostic study investigating whether procedure setting (procedure room [PR] versus OR) is associated with increased surgical site infection (SSI) rates in the Veterans Affairs population undergoing carpal tunnel, trigger finger, or first dorsal compartment releases. The incidence of SSI was compared between 717 OR patients and 2,000 PR patients. The rate of SSI was 2.8 percent in both groups. The study identified trigger finger release as a risk factor for SSI; however, this was independent of procedure setting.

Study Finds Serum Procalcitonin a Reliable Indicator of Sepsis in Patients with SCI

A prospective observational cohort study in the European Spine Journal found that there was a strong positive correlation between serum procalcitonin (PCT) levels and septicemia in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). PCT levels were compared against other common biomarkers (C-reactive protein [CRP], erythrocyte sedimentation rate, white blood cells [WBC], blood culture, and body temperature) as an indicator of sepsis in a total of 27 SCI patients who had an infection. Of these, 10 patients developed septicemia. All patients had elevated PCT levels, while 60 percent had elevated CRP and 30 percent had elevated WBC levels.
