Study Assesses Muscle Strength Recovery following Superior Capsular Reconstruction
A case series in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery evaluated the muscle strength recovery of 20 patients who underwent superior capsular reconstruction (SCR) for irreparable rotator cuff tears and shoulder pseudoparalysis using a tensor fascia lata graft. Abduction, range of motion (ROM), and acromiohumeral distance (AHD) were measured and compared with the unaffected side. Postoperative ROM and AHD significantly improved when compared against preoperative measurements; however, abduction strength was not restored after SCR

Study: Topical TXA Results in Reduced Blood Loss after Knee Arthroscopic Arthrolysis
BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders published a retrospective study examining the effects of topical tranexamic acid (TXA) in knee arthroscopic arthrolysis. Forty-seven and 40 patients comprised the topical TXA group and control group, respectively. Postoperative blood loss volumes, knee range of motion (ROM), visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores, and complications were compared between groups. Compared with the control group, the TXA group had significantly lower total blood loss volumes. Additionally, TXA patients had better VAS pain scores and ROM than the control group.

Study Compares Efficacy of PRP Injections in Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy versus Partial Thickness Rotator Cuff Tears
Arthroscopy published a prospective cohort study comparing the effect of subacromial leukocyte-rich platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections on functional outcomes, pain improvement, sleep disturbances, and return to sports (RTS) in patients with isolated rotator cuff tendinopathy (RCT, n = 105) and those with partial-thickness rotator cuff tears (PTRCTs, n = 45) The outcome measurements included the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, evaluated at two, six, and 12 months. At all follow-up points, isolated RCT patients had statistically greater improvements in ASES scores compared with those in the PTRCT group.

Are Opioid Re-prescriptions after ACLR in Adolescent Patients Associated with Opioid Use Disorder?
According to a study in the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, in adolescent patients undergoing ACL reconstruction (ACLR), for each additional 100 morphine milligram equivalents (MMEs) prescribed in total, the odds of opioid use disorders (OUD) increased by 13 percent. In total, 4,459 adolescent ACLR cases were included. Of these, 29 patients were diagnosed with an OUD within one year of surgery. Patients with OUD were more likely to have opioid re-prescriptions within six weeks.
