Study: Septic Arthritis within One Year of TKA Is Associated with PJI
According to a study in The Journal of Arthroplasty, the risk of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) was increased in the first year after septic arthritis (SA). The study focused on the incidence of PJI in patients with a history of SA at zero to three months, three to six months, six to nine months, and nine to 12 months. Overall, 4,251 patients were grouped based on the time between the SA diagnosis and TKA. Compared with a control group, all time cohorts were more likely to require revision due to PJI.
Retrospective Study Investigates Shoulder Pain and Morphological Degenerative Changes after Contralateral Amputation
A retrospective case series in Archives of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery investigated musculoskeletal pain and structural degenerative changes of the shoulder after contralateral amputation. Twenty patients were included in the study. Morphological degenerative changes were assessed via radiograph, and upper extremity and physical activity was measured via Subjective Shoulder Value (SSV) and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) scores. The mean time since amputation was 26.3 years. The mean SSV and DASH scores were 61.9 and 476, respectively. The unharmed shoulder showed significantly more full-thickness rotator cuff tears and joint effusion compared with the amputated side.
Study Compares Open versus Arthroscopic All-inside Anatomic Reconstruction with Autologous Gracilis Tendon to Treat Chronic Lateral Ankle Instability
Arthroscopy published a prospective study assessing return to sport (RTS) rates and clinical outcomes of arthroscopic all-inside and open anatomic reconstruction with gracilis tendon autograft for chronic lateral ankle instability. There were 31 arthroscopic all-inside anatomic reconstruction patients and 26 open anatomic reconstruction with gracilis tendon autograft. The American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score and visual analog scale (VAS) were assessed at three months, six months, 12 months, and 24 months after surgery. Compared with the open group, those in the arthroscopy group had significantly earlier RTS and improved AOFAS and VAS scores at six months postoperatively.
Prognostic Study: Evaluation of Shoe Size and Calf Girth in Children with Idiopathic Clubfoot
The Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics published a prognostic study investigating the effect of a treated clubfoot on shoe size and calf girth in pediatric patients. The study population comprised 26 patients with unilateral clubfoot, 19 with bilateral clubfeet, and 20 controls. Symmetry differences were measured at ages 5, 7, and 10. Patients with bilateral clubfeet had a significantly smaller difference between both feet regarding shoe size On average, patients with unilateral clubfoot had a 1.5 size smaller shoe Unilateral clubfoot resulted in a 2 cm smaller calf girth on the involved side compared with the uninvolved side.
