Study Investigates the Influence of Timing on Staged Bilateral Hip Arthroscopy

According to a retrospective study published online in Arthroscopy, bilateral hip arthroscopy (HA) staged ≤12 months apart was associated with a decreased risk of revision compared with >12 months. A total of 998 patients were divided into four cohorts based on timing between bilateral HA stages: ≤3 months, 3 to ≤6 months, 6 to ≤12 months, and >12 months between HA. The outcomes included 90-day postoperative medical complications and two-year surgical complications. The risk of revision was significantly lower with ≤12 months between stages; however, there were no significant differences in complications between the cohorts.

Study: Intrinsic Risk Factors for First-time Noncontact ACL Injury in High School and College Athletes

Sports Health published a prospective cohort study online investigating the intrinsic risk factors associated with first-time noncontact ACL injuries in college and high school athletes. Overall, 109 athletes with initial noncontact ACL injuries were matched with a control cohort. Demographic characteristics, joint laxity, lower extremity alignment, strength, and personality characteristics were measured. Risk factors for both men and women included: having a parent with prior ACL injury, increased body weight, anterior displacement of the tibia relative to the femur, genu recurvatum, and generalized joint laxity.

Study: Superior Capsule Reconstruction with Biceps Tendon versus Humeral Dermal Allograft

In a retrospective study published in the Journal of Shoulder & Elbow Surgery, superior capsule reconstruction using either long head biceps tendon (BT) autograft or humeral dermal (HD) allograft both demonstrated favorable outcomes, with no significant between-group differences. There were 33 BT patients and 22 HD patients. Range of motion (ROM), strength and shoulder function scoring, plain radiography, and MRI were the main outcome measurements. Forward flexion ROM increased from 121.94 to 148.71 degrees in the BT cohort, compared with 129.0 to 148.64 degrees in the HD cohort.

Study: Fusion Rates after Ankle Arthrodesis with an Ilizarov External Fixator in Septic Ankle Arthritis Patients

Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research published a retrospective study online investigating the fusion rates, complications, and patient-reported outcomes after ankle arthrodesis with an Ilizarov external fixator in patients with septic ankle arthritis. Overall, 54 patients were included in the study, with a minimum six-year follow-up. Complications, the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot score, and the visual analog scale (VAS) active pain score were measured. Overall, boney fusion was achieved in 96 percent of patients. Two percent of patients experienced recurrent infections. AOFAS and VAS scores improved from 28 to 80 and decreased from 8 to 2, respectively.

Sex and Gender Influence Pain and Pain Management

Orthopaedic surgeons manage pain daily and are among the highest prescribers of opioid medications. Although women can differ from men in their experiences of and responses to pain, the 2021 AAOS Clinical Practice Guideline on Pharmacologic, Physical, and Cognitive Pain Alleviation for Musculoskeletal Extremity/Pelvis Surgery noted that almost none of the relevant studies included data based on sex or gender. Women can experience pain differently than do men, and gender identity can impact the development of coping strategies and may impact how pain is experienced and expressed.
