Study: Residency Program Adherence to Universal Interview Offer Day Guidelines

A study published in the June 15 issue of the Journal of the AAOS ® reported that less than half of orthopaedic surgery residency programs that agreed to participate in a universal interview offer day (UIOD) during the 2020–2021 cycle were strictly adherent to American Orthopaedic Association Council of Residency Program Directors recommendations during the first UIOD. Forty-six programs were included. Thirty percent of programs sent out offers outside of the assigned time and 28 percent sent out offers on dates other than the UIOD.

Study: Long-term Outcomes of Revision THA Using a Tapered and Fluted Modular Stem

A study published online in The Journal of Arthroplasty found that the use of a tapered and fluted modular stem in revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) led to a 91.1 percent rate of stem survivorship at a follow-up of ≥10 years. In total, 113 THAs were included. Mean follow-up was 16 years (range, 10 to 23 years). Six femoral re-revisions were required. Ninety-five percent of hips demonstrated osseointegration. The rate of survivorship from aseptic re-revision was 94.6 percent.

Study: Intramedullary Nail Insertion Point and Postoperative Alignment in Tibial Fracture Surgery

During surgery for tibial fractures, the intramedullary nailing (IMN) entry point was associated with postoperative alignment, according to a study published online in Injury. Fifty-four patients were treated with either the extra-articular technique (EAT) or the patellar eversion technique (PET). The IMN nailing point was 4.04 mm medial to the optimal entry point for the EAT group and 0.27 mm lateral for the PET group. Angular deformation in postoperative anteroposterior radiographs was 2.49 degrees and 0.32 degrees valgus in the EAT and PET group, respectively.

Systematic Review Finds Limited Benefit with Suprascapular Nerve Release in Rotator Cuff Repair

A systematic review and meta-analysis published online in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery found that suprascapular nerve release (SSNR) offered no additional benefits in functional improvement or pain relief when added to rotator cuff tendon repair. Nine studies, comprising 279 patients, were included. There were no significant differences in improvements in shoulder function or Visual Analog Scale scores from preoperative levels between patients who did or did not receive SSNR.

Study: Risk Factors for Reoperation after Surgery for Spinal Epidural Abscess

A retrospective study identified six factors associated with 30-day reoperation after surgery for spinal epidural abscess: preoperative urinary incontinence, ventral location of abscess relative to thecal sac, cervical abscess, preoperative wound infection, and leukocytosis. This study was published online in The Spine Journal. Data was collected from the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) and five institutional databases. Cervical spine abscess was the only significant predictor in the NSQIP cohort. Hypoalbuminemia was a significant predictor of 90-day reoperation.

Study Characterizes Incidence, Survival Rates for Osteosarcoma

A new study provides improved insights into the incidence and survival rates of osteosarcoma since 1975. From 1990 through 2018, the overall incidence of osteosarcoma fell from 3.1 to 2.7 cases per 1 million people. The annual incidence since 1975 has increased in the youngest patient subgroup (ages 0–24): 3.7 cases per 1 million people in 1975 to 1979 to 5.2 cases per 1 million people in 2015 to 2018. Survival from osteosarcoma markedly improved between the periods of 1975 to 1989 and 1990 to 1999, yet the researchers wrote that there has been minimal change in five-year survival for the disease since the 1990s.
