Study: Hispanic Ethnicity Is Associated with TKA Complications in Obese Patients
A study published in the Dec. 1 issue of the Journal of the AAOS ® reported that Hispanic ethnicity was associated with a 1.36 times greater odds of postoperative total knee arthroplasty (TKA) complications in obese patients compared with non-Hispanic patients. Using the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database, the researchers identified 35,027 patients, 6.3 percent of whom were Hispanic. Hispanic patients were also more likely to receive transfusion and have prolonged length of stay, but less likely to have wound disruption than non-Hispanic patients.

Study: Have Post-THA Complications Risen as the Number of Outpatient Cases Increases?
A study of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database, published online in The Journal of Arthroplasty, found that the incidence of outpatient total hip arthroplasty (THA) procedures increased between 2015 and 2018, but rates of early complications have not increased in that time. Four percent of the cohort (n = 4,813) underwent outpatient THA. Compared to inpatients, outpatients tended to be younger, have lower BMI, and have fewer comorbidities. Complication rates were 3.2 percent in the outpatient group, 5.3 percent in patients with length of stay (LOS) of 1-2 days, and 15.6 percent of patients with LOS ≥3 days. Readmission rates were 1.6, 2.6, and 4.7 percent, respectively.

| Study Finds COVID-19 Did Not Disrupt Time-to-surgery Benchmarks in Patients with Traumatic Fracture
A retrospective study of 3,589 patients with musculoskeletal trauma treated before and during the COVID-19 pandemic (post-COVID, n = 1,414) did not find significant differences in time-to-surgery outcomes due to the pandemic. These findings were published online in JAMA Health Forum. In the overall cohort, 3.1 percent of patients with open fractures and 21.8 percent of patients with closed hip/femur fracture did not meet 24-hour time-to-surgery benchmarks. Differences in time to surgery in the post-pandemic cohort were not statistically significant for either indication.

| Study: Steroid Injection versus Surgical Release for De Quervain’s Stenosing Tenosynovitis
A prospective study of 30 patients published online in Current Orthopaedic Practice found that corticosteroid mini-injection for De Quervain’s stenosing tenosynovitis demonstrated favorable efficacy compared to invasive surgical release. Sixteen of 31 hands received injection, and thirteen improved at final follow-up. All 15 surgically treated hands improved at final follow-up. Average functional scores (according to a modified De Quervain’s assessment), were 14±12.38 and 9.87±5.17 in the injection and surgery groups, respectively.

| Study Investigates Corresponding Physical Ability Levels for PROMIS PF Scores
A large cross-sectional study, published online Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, assessed how Patient-reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Physical Function (PF) numerical sores correspond to common physical abilities. In total, 97,852 PROMIS PF assessments were pooled then compared to scores and PF outcomes among a cohort of 37,517 orthopaedic outpatients. Patients with a PROMIS PF score of 40 most frequently reported experiencing “some difficulty” with physical labor, yard work, household chores, and walking more than 1 mile. A score of 50 was associated with “little” or “no” difficulty and a score of 30 was associated with inability to perform these activities.
