: The golf outing gave physicians, physical therapists and exhibitors the opportunity to visit together in a great location with beautiful weather!

: Folks had a great day to renew old friendships, make new ones and chase the elusive white ball around the course.

: Residents from Marshall University and West Virginia University joined members of the West Virginia Orthopaedic Society and other experts for a Friday evening session on the business of orthopaedics. Our non-physician speakers incuded WV Association of Orthopaedic Executives President David Proctor, MBA, ATC, of Scott Orthopaedic Center, John Slicer, RP, of McKinley-Carter Wealth Management and Frank Vitale of Clear Mountain Bank.

: WVOS President-elect Brett Whitfield, MD, and others shared their employment experiences in varous forms of practice settings to give the residents some insights into the choices they will need to make in the future.

: Former WVOS President Luis Bolano, MD, shared information on large practice settings.

: As part of the Business of Orthopaedics seminar, residents heard the options for various practice settings including academic practice, Robert Santrock, MD, solo or small practice, Brett Whitfield, MD, group practice, Luis Bolano, MD, multi-specialty practice, Bruce Haupt, MD, and hospital practice, James Rice, MD.

: Saturday morning featured mist rising from the lake under a full moon in the breaking dawn.

: Members of the West Virginia Association of Orthopaedic Executives (WVAOE) attended their own session Saturday morning to learn to increase practice profitability. Early morning speakers included the new legislative representative from the WV State Medical Association and Jeff Barnes, of the Barnes Agency, who shared his expertise gained over 25 years in healthcare marketing.

: Bernie Deem of Deem HR shared her thoughts on motivating without money and 10 secrets she wished every HR person in West Virginia knew.

: In a first for the West Virginia Orthopaedic Society (WVOS), this was a combined meeting with the West Virginia Physical Therapy Association (WVPTA). The morning sessions were combined, then the afternoon sessions were separated. The general theme for the meeting was “Upper Extremity Arthroplasty.”

: CME Conference Chair Jack Steel, MD, served as one of the moderators for the morning session.

: Early morning sessions included a national/legislative update by AAOS Councilor Greg Krivchenia II, MD, Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty (RTSA) by Kelly Bal, MD, WVU Department of Orthopaedics, Morgantown, Non and Post-Operative Rehabilitation Strategies for Shoulder Pathologies: Chondral through Instability Issues by Ellen Shanley, PT, Ph.D., OCS, Proaxis Therapy, Greenville, SC, and Total Shoulder and Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty: Complications, Revision, Salvage, Catastrophes and Pearls by Thomas W. Wright, MD, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL.

: Late morning sessions included Total Elbow Arthroplasty by Luis Bolano, MD, Scott Orthopedic Center, Huntington, Total Elbow Arthroplasty: Complications, Revision, Salvage, Catastrophes and Pearls by Thomas Wright, MD, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. In addition, physicians and other participants had the opportunity to visit with a variety of exhibitors throughout the day.

: Dr. Felix Cheung and Marshall’s practice administrator Chad Fisher enjoyed lunch with WVAOE speaker Bernie Deem.

: Bill Sale joined the Majestro, Molina and Ede family of physicians for lunch in Stillwaters Restaurant.

: Jack and Mary Ellen Koay take time to relax before tackling the dessert offerings!

: Drs. James Cox, Thomas Wright and Greg Krivchenia continue their morning discussions over lunch.

: Drs. Kim, Padamanaban, Mir and Puranik enjoy time to renew friendships during the Spring Break Meeting and lunch at Stonewall Resort.

: Dr. Alexander Rosenstein, one of our newest members, enjoys time between class with his wife Vicky.

: WVOS Executive Director Diane Slaughter, CAE, APR, was captured visiting with members during lunch!

: Drs. Robert Lowe and Tom Scott took a lesson from the residents and enjoyed the beautiful day at Stonewall.

: Following lunch, the torch was passed from outgoing President Joe Prud’homme, MD, to newly elected President David Ede, who will serve until 2015. In addition to Ede, new members of the WVOS Board of Directors are: Vice President Brett Whitfield, Beckley; Secretary-Treasurer Stanley Tao, Huntington; Immediate Past President Joe Prud’homme, Morgantown; At-large Members Felix Cheung and Vivek Neginhal, Huntington, and Robert Santrock, Morgantown; AAOC Councilor Greg Krivchenia, New Martinsville; Membership Chair Bill Sale, Charleston; Legislative Chair David Waxman, Bridgeport; Program Chair Jack Steel, Huntington; and Ex-officio Members Sandy Emery and Alvin Jones, Morgantown, Ali Oliashirazi and Tom Riley, Huntington.

: One of the residents created a presentation unlike any other…audience members needed 3-D glasses to get the full impact of the slides!

: Residents from Marshall University and West Virginia University gave afternoon presentations. The topics and presenters from Marshall were: The syndesmosis contact zone: A study of over 3000 anatomical specimens from the Smithsonian Terry Collection, Justin Jones, MD; OR culture and room traffic: Visual cues are necessary, Thomas Riley, MD; andProcedure update for TKA: Knee distraction improves debridement, Sinan Ozgur, MD. The topics and presenters from WVU were: Why do medical students choose orthopaedics?, Mark Floyd, MD; Short Term Outcomes for Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty for One Surgeon, John Tidwell, MD; and Tissue Cell Adherence and Biofilm Formation on Common Orthopaedic Biomaterials in a Co-Culture Environment, Dave McConda, MD. Resident prizes were won by Drs. Dave McConda, John Widwell and Thomas Riley. Our congratulations go to each of our outstanding residents!
