Residents from Marshall University and West Virginia University joined members of the West Virginia Orthopaedic Society and other experts for a Friday evening session on the business of orthopaedics. Our non-physician speakers incuded WV Association of Orthopaedic Executives President David Proctor, MBA, ATC, of Scott Orthopaedic Center, John Slicer, RP, of McKinley-Carter Wealth Management and Frank Vitale of Clear Mountain Bank.

As part of the Business of Orthopaedics seminar, residents heard the options for various practice settings including academic practice, Robert Santrock, MD, solo or small practice, Brett Whitfield, MD, group practice, Luis Bolano, MD, multi-specialty practice, Bruce Haupt, MD, and hospital practice, James Rice, MD.

Members of the West Virginia Association of Orthopaedic Executives (WVAOE) attended their own session Saturday morning to learn to increase practice profitability. Early morning speakers included the new legislative representative from the WV State Medical Association and Jeff Barnes, of the Barnes Agency, who shared his expertise gained over 25 years in healthcare marketing.

In a first for the West Virginia Orthopaedic Society (WVOS), this was a combined meeting with the West Virginia Physical Therapy Association (WVPTA). The morning sessions were combined, then the afternoon sessions were separated. The general theme for the meeting was “Upper Extremity Arthroplasty.”

In addition, physicians and other participants had the opportunity to visit with a variety of exhibitors throughout the day.

Following lunch, the torch was passed from outgoing President Joe Prud’homme, MD, to newly elected President David Ede, who will serve until 2015. The topics and presenters from Marshall were: The syndesmosis contact zone: A study of over 3000 anatomical specimens from the Smithsonian Terry Collection, Justin Jones, MD; OR culture and room traffic: Visual cues are necessary, Thomas Riley, MD; andProcedure update for TKA: Knee distraction improves debridement, Sinan Ozgur, MD.
The topics and presenters from WVU were: Why do medical students choose orthopaedics?, Mark Floyd, MD; Short Term Outcomes for Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty for One Surgeon, John Tidwell, MD; and Tissue Cell Adherence and Biofilm Formation on Common Orthopaedic Biomaterials in a Co-Culture Environment, Dave McConda, MD.
Resident prizes were won by Drs. Dave McConda, John Widwell and Thomas Riley. Our congratulations go to each of our outstanding residents!
