Study: Prior Hip Instability Is Associated with a Seven-fold Greater Risk of Dislocation after Head and Liner Exchange

In patients undergoing isolated head and liner exchange after total hip arthroplasty, a history of dislocation was associated with seven-times greater odds of postoperative dislocation, according to a retrospective study published online in The Journal of Arthroplasty. Thirteen percent of 209 head and liner exchange patients had a dislocation within two years of exchange. Older age and higher BMI were also associated with risk of dislocation.

Study: Similar Improvement after RSA or Hemiarthroplasty for Cuff Tear Arthroplasty

For treatment of cuff tear arthroplasty, reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) and hemiarthroplasty both led to significantly improved health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) and joint function, according to a study published in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. Thirty-nine hemiarthroplasty patients and 33 RSA patients were included. HRQoL was measured via the Short-Form 36 and function was measured via the Simple Shoulder Test. Costs were significantly lower for patients who met selection criteria for hemiarthroplasty.

Study: Greater Psychological Readiness Is Associated with Return to Sport after ACL Reconstruction

A systematic review published online in The American Journal of Sports Medicine reported that patients who return to sport (RTS) after ACL reconstruction demonstrated significantly greater psychological readiness and self-efficacy and lower kinesiophobia compared with patients who did not RTS, even with clinically similar knee function between groups. Sixteen studies were included. Patients who did RTS did not exceed a minimal clinically important difference for International Knee Documentation Committee scores compared with patients who did not RTS.
