AAOS Commits to Grant Focusing on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Orthopaedics

At its December 2021 meeting, the AAOS Board of Directors approved $1 million for a new grant program that will focus on improving diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the orthopaedic surgery specialty. Beginning in 2023, the AAOS DEI Grant Program will award grants up to $200,000 per year for DEI efforts, including programs that build a diverse pipeline of learners coming into orthopaedics, support DEI initiatives for community/academic orthopaedic surgeons, and expand availability of AAOS educational and networking opportunities to diverse students and practicing orthopaedic surgeons. More information on the DEI Grant Program will be provided at the 2022 Annual Meeting, March 22–25, in Chicago.

RCT Finds No Benefit in Sleep Quality with Use of Melatonin after TJA

A randomized, controlled trial (RCT) of 118 total joint arthroplasty (TJA) patients, published in the Journal of the AAOS ®, found that using 6 mg melatonin daily did not improve postoperative sleep quality when compared with a placebo. There were no significant differences in Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores between the melatonin or placebo groups at any time point during the six-week period after TJA. Elevated baseline PSQI was associated with increased PSQI at weeks two and six. Decreased length of stay was associated with worse sleep at week two. Hip arthroplasty (versus knee arthroplasty) was associated with worse sleep at week six.

Study: Midterm Outcomes of Hip Arthroscopy with ITB Allograft for Unrepairable Capsular Defect

A study published online in Arthroscopy reported favorable midterm outcomes of arthroscopic hip capsular reconstruction with iliotibial band (ITB) allograft as a salvage option for unrepairable capsular defect. Thirty-nine patients were included. Fifteen percent converted to total hip arthroplasty at an average of 2.1 years. There were four revision arthroscopies, all in females. Among the 29 patients without subsequent surgery, three-year survivorship was 86 percent, with a mean survival of 5.7 years, and 90 percent achieved a minimal clinically important difference in Hip Outcome Score – Activity of Daily Living and Sports subcategories.

Study: Low Rate of Iatrogenic Nerve Injury with Mini-open Approach for Medial Pinning in Pediatric Elbow Fracture

A retrospective study published in the Jan. 5 issue of the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery found a 0.43 percent rate of iatrogenic ulnar nerve injury with a mini-open approach for medial cross-pinning in pediatric supracondylar humeral fractures, which is nearly 10 times lower than a previously published estimate (3.4 percent). The researchers assessed outcomes of 698 patients treated with this technique at a single center between 2007 and 2017. There were three cases of iatrogenic nerve damage, all affecting the ulnar nerve. Ulnar nerve symptoms resolved at a mean of 15 weeks.

Court Allows COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate for Workers at Federally Funded Healthcare Facilities

On Thursday, the Supreme Court blocked the Biden-Harris administration’s proposed COVID-19 vaccination or test requirement for large employers (>100 employees); however, the Court allowed a similar mandate to continue for workers at healthcare facilities that receive Medicare or Medicaid funds. The mandate requires vaccines for staff at hospitals, ambulatory surgical settings, home health agencies, and more, for the facility to qualify for participation in the Medicare and Medicaid programs.
