Study: Validity of PROMIS Mobility and Physical Function Assessments for Acetabular Fracture

In a study of patients treated for acetabular fractures, the Patient-reported Outcomes Information System (PROMIS) Mobility and Physical Function instruments demonstrated significant correlation with the Short Form 36 (SF-36) test and the Short Form Musculoskeletal Functional Assessment (SMFA). This study was published in the Journal of the AAOS ®. Forty-three patients completed all four assessments over a mean follow-up of 26 months. Weaker, moderate correlations were found between assessment types at >18 months of follow-up. PROMIS instruments were faster to complete than either SF-36 or SMFA. African American patients took significantly longer to complete SMFA and SF-36 compared with White patients.

Study: Greater Nonhome Discharge after TJA in Patients from Medically Underserved Areas

A retrospective study published online in The Journal of Arthroplasty reported that total joint arthroplasty (TJA) patients from medically underserved areas are at greater risk of nonhome discharge and 90-day return to the ED. The researchers compared 11,451 patients treated in Maryland, including 1,057 patients residing in a Maryland Health Enterprise Zone (MHEZ), an area with reduced access to healthcare. Patients living in the MHEZ presented with poorer overall American Society of Anesthesiologists and Hierarchical Condition Categories scores. Other factors associated with nonhome discharge/ED readmission in MHEZ patients included household composition/type, disability, and transportation type.

Study: Relationship of Age and Humeral Retrotorsion in Adolescent Baseball Players

A study of young Japanese baseball players, published online in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, identified age-related differences in humeral retrotorsion angle (HTA) and soft tissue extensibility (STE) between dominant and nondominant sides. In total, 172 patients (mean age, 15 years) were separated according to symptomatic or asymptomatic glenohumeral internal rotation deficit. Difference in bilateral HTA between sides were significantly increased after age 13, plateauing at 16 years. STE was only observed in symptomatic athletes and was significantly increased in those aged >16 years.

Study: Five-year Outcomes of Hemiarthroplasty with MTP-1 Joint Hemiprosthesis

A prospective study published online in Foot & Ankle International reported five-year outcomes of hemiarthroplasty with the novel BioPro metatarsophalangeal-1 (MTP-1) joint hemiprosthesis in 11 female patients. Nine patients were available at five-year follow-up. Roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis showed nonstabilizing medial and distal translation, as well as progressive metatarsal erosion from one year postoperatively (mean, 0.49 mm). Progressive subsidence was reported up to three years postoperatively (mean, 2.1 mm). Patients demonstrated improvements in pain, function, and quality scores that were maintained through later follow-up.

Study Investigates Agreement between Spine Registry Data and Electronic Health Records

A study published online in the European Spine Journal validated the agreement between the Norwegian Registry for Spine Surgery (NORspine) and electronic health records for 474 patients treated for spinal stenosis. NORspine demonstrated weak agreement to electronic records for perioperative complications (sensitivity, 40 percent) and moderate agreement for American Society of Anesthesiologists classification. NORspine was strongly aligned with electronic records for perioperative details (sensitivity, 92–99 percent) and demonstrated excellent agreement for patient height, weight, and smoking status. Comorbidities were underreported in NORspine.
